How do 2×2 passport photos fit on a 4×6 sheet?

Understand the photo size and the sheet size
The sheet is a layout, not the photo size you submit. Two 2-inch columns span 4 inches; three 2-inch rows span 6 inches. This calculation assumes exact dimensions without added gaps or margins.
For paper applications, the State Department specifies a 2×2 inch photo and a head height of 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to top of head. Two inches is exactly 50.8 mm; official guidance rounds the photo dimension to 51 mm.
Keep paper applications separate from online renewal
A sheet layout is relevant when preparing physical photos for a paper application. For online renewal, upload the original unedited camera photo to the official system and use its positioning and cropping tools, following the digital photo instructions.
Do not photograph a printed sheet to create an online upload, or treat our watermarked preview as a submission file. Keep your original photo separate from any print preparation.
Print at actual size and measure the result
For a correctly prepared sheet, select 4×6 inch photo-quality paper and 100% actual-size printing. Turn off automatic scaling or cropping. Use matte or glossy photo-quality paper, and check the finished print with a ruler before cutting it.
A printer or lab can change the output size even when the layout is correct. Ask about cropping, scaling and borderless settings. If the setup cannot preserve all six full-size photos, use a different print setup rather than shrinking the photos to fit.
Review the image before arranging copies
Repeating one photo six times repeats any problems in it. Use the checker guide to understand automated estimates, and the lighting guide if you need a retake.

Will every pharmacy or photo lab print the sheet?
We cannot promise a store's service, price or result. Ask the lab whether it can preserve a prepared 4×6 layout at actual size, and measure the completed print.
Do I need a 4×6 sheet for online renewal?
No. Online renewal uses your original digital photo in the official upload system. A print sheet is a separate preparation step for physical photos.
